Women of Color Grow the Resistance

“The energy of our women of color contingent was palpable -- many individual women and their families gravitated towards our drums, banners, and our joyful chants of liberation and justice. One mother and her child picked up the megaphone and sang a song of resistance. Another group of older white women joined our delegation and asked to help carry our 75 foot “RESIST” banner with us. This is what it feels like to lead with a vision of organized-community.”

On J20 and J21 (Inauguration Day & the Women’s March on Washington) the Center for Story-Based Strategy team joined organizers and members from 4 alliances - Climate Justice Alliance, Right to the City, Indigenous Environmental Network and Grassroots Global Justice - in DC to come together as the It Takes Roots to Grow the Resistance delegation - connecting struggles for land, water, housing, and gender justice to firmly stand up to Trump and his corporate cabinet as the defenders of our communities.

Along with the Ruckus Society, CSS provided on-site support for the delegation. CSS was able to bring in our key tools and ensure that the stories of this incredibly organized contingent led by women of color was seen and heard. From the banners, to chants, to the cardboard signs being worn by women-leaders, the It Takes Roots contingent was deeply grounded in their role as defenders. From actions in front of the Dept of Energy and Housing and Urban Development Dept to our presence as a diverse women of color led contingent in the Women’s March, the delegation declared a vision that the only way to resist Trump and his corporate cabinet is by standing with each other in intersecting struggle and profound solidarity.

As the world asks “what’s next” in the first 100 days of the resistance movement, it is clear that leadership from women of color and communities organizing on the frontlines of social, economic, gender and racial justice fights are needed now more than ever. Stay tuned as CSS continues supporting these efforts…
