What is The Sandbox Gathering?
The Sandbox Gathering is a free, one-day event designed to build our movement’s capacity to imagine, create and distribute exciting visual messages that have the potential to #changethestory on issues that matter to us.

What will we actually be doing all day?
We’re going to be making animated GIFs! We’ll be working in small groups to use SBS to analyze, experiment and create visual messages. Participants will get training in using smartphone apps to create and distribute animations. These are tools that will make it possible to make things you didn’t think you could.

When and where?
We’ll be gathering from 9am until 6pm on Saturday, June 17th at MIT in Boston, MA.

Who can participate?
The Sandbox is for CSS Advanced Training Alumni, and other folks in our network who are fluent in CSS’s story-based strategy (SBS) framework. It is not an SBS training.

How much does it cost?
The event is free. CSS will provide light morning snacks and a lunch to participants.

I have something else going on that day, can I just show up for the morning/afternoon/etc.?
We’re sorry, but participants need to commit to the full day’s schedule. We believe it’s important for you, to get everything out of it. But it’s also important for other participants, and for us! We need folks all-in so we can best assess the effectiveness of the activities, so we can hold more Sandbox Gatherings in the future!

I’m not a creative/designer/communications person, so this probably isn’t for me?
WRONG! If you have learned story-based strategy, you can participate no matter your technical skill or job title. You’ll get training on user-friendly apps that make it easy to create animations that tell your story. Most of all, you’ll get time flexing your SBS muscles while having fun in small teams.

I don’t really do “creative” work, or online communications, so this isn’t for me?
WRONG! If you are a change-agent who tells stories in ANY medium, this gathering is for you. It’s not just about learning how to make animations. You’ll come away with the tools necessary to prototype, iterate, and release visual messages that get to the heart of the issue at hand. With so many possibilities, the art of making GIFs opens up an amazing landscape of imagination that makes prototyping and testing an idea or message within the reach of any budget.
