Our organization started with a simple idea: to end the era of outdated stories.
The Center for Story-based Strategy (CSS) is a national movement-building organization dedicated to harnessing the power of narrative for social change.
We offer social justice networks, alliances and organizations the analysis, training and strategic support to change the story on the issues that matter most.
“The ideas that make people change how they engage, how they vote, how they choose policy are serious terrain, and Center for Story-based Strategy is one of the best at training others how to take the battle of the story seriously.” -- Malkia Cyril, Director, Center for Media Justice
"CSS's work filled a critical gap in our communications strategy: the development of a compelling narrative to build public support for systemic tax reform in California. Their tools and framework combined with effective facilitation helped surface strategic questions about our framing and messaging strategy, tap into our creative thinking and build alignment among our alliance partners." -- Sabrina Smith, Deputy Director, California Calls
"CSS is a great resource for progressives who want to shift the terms of the debate on entrenched issues.” -- Anthony Thigpenn, President, S.C.O.P.E
“If organizing is the muscle of social movements, and strategy is the brain, then story is the heart and soul. CSS’s methodology combines the power of story together with strategy to serve grassroots organizing and build powerful, unstoppable movements. " — Gopal Dayaneni, Movement Generation Justice & Ecology Project
“Center for Story-based Strategy earns its name by reinventing and reinvigorating how activism works. They go to the heart of the problem—how we imagine the world, how language and belief shape possibility, and enlarge those possibilities by reframing and rethinking.” -- Rebecca Solnit, Bestselling Author, “Hope in the Dark” & “Storming the Gates of Paradise”
